## Description
Ace Attorney 5 marks the return of Phoenix Wright as the main protagonist of the series since the original trilogy. The game takes place one year after Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the events of which cleared Wright's name of the circumstances behind his disbarment and allowed him to practice law again. He will be accompanied by a new assistant, a rookie defense attorney and psychologist named Kokone Kizuki. The first case in the game will see Wright go up against the younger brother of Winston Payne, a recurring character in the series, as he defends a high school student who is charged for causing an explosion at the courthouse.

### Kizuki Kokone (希月 心音)
Athena Cykes is one of three defense attorneys in the Wright Anything Agency, working in this capacity alongside Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice. She is a specialist in analytical psychology, which she studied in Europe. Cykes has a special ability to pick up subtle emotions from witnesses' voices, and she examines these using a program called the "Mood Matrix". The Mood Matrix is linked to her AI partner Widget, who hangs around her neck, that changes color with her emotions.

### Naruhodou Ryuuichi (成歩堂 龍一)
"Ace Attorney" and main character of the first three games, Phoenix has wanted to be a defense lawyer since he was a kid, and first appears as the new addition to Mia Fey's law practice.

Phoenix is generally easy-going, which usually leads to his friends leading him around. He's dedicated to defending his innocent clients, but because he's just starting out he depends a lot on his boss and mentor, Mia Fey. Phoenix is also a loyal friend who won't back down once he's set his mind on something. He has a bit of a sarcastic side that he usually keeps to himself.

### Odoroki Housuke (王泥喜 法介)
Housuke tends to be sarcastic and critical. He often makes blunt comments concerning his mentor [URL=http://vndb.org/c3941]Naruhodou Ryuuichi's[/URL] piano playing in particular. He occasionally even shows some disdain for some of his clients. He also has a vain side; he frequently makes puns out of his own name, and he practices his shouting for hours at night, calling it his "Chords of Steel", which sometimes makes his voice raspy. Underneath it all, he is serious about his job, and he cares deeply about justice. He is also caring, frequently worrying about Trucy Wright as well as his clients.

In court, Odoroki Housuke is often unsure of himself and easily flustered. He has been shown to suffer somewhat from stage fright in court. However, he is just as determined as his mentor was. His training under his former mentor, Kirihito Garyuu, has led him to rely mostly on facts and arguments, which often puts him at odds with Naruhodou's use of questionable tactics. Housuke has also adopted Kirihito's serious attitude, which conflicts with Wright's easygoing manner. Housuke's unusual hairstyle frightens many of the defendants or witnesses whom he sees, though unlike Naruhodou, who claims his hair is "natural," Housuke uses hair gel. 

Housuke is afraid of heights and rides a bike. Additionally, when talking about newspapers, he has admitted that he only reads the funnies. Housuke claims to be good with astrology and hula hoops. The bracelet Housuke has helps him to focus on the nervous habits of other people. When Housuke feels his bracelet getting tighter during a cross-examination, he knows to focus on the witness.

### Ban Gouzou (番 轟三)
A hot-blooded detective with the catchphrase "In justice we trust!" He has evidently worked with Simon Blackquill many times and was paired up with him in court. The detective hoped to help the prosecutor redeem himself, and he seemed completely oblivious to the latter's attempts to manipulate him. 

[Spoiler]At some point during 2026, Detective Fulbright died via undisclosed circumstances (although it was heavily implied that he had been murdered), although no-one would find out that he was actually deceased for a whole year as his body was unidentified at the time.

A mysterious international agent known only as "the phantom" took on the late detective's identity, meaning that the Fulbright that Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, and Athena Cykes met during their cases was this imposter. It would not be until the retrial of the UR-1 Incident that the real Fulbright's body was identified and his imposter brought to justice for the murders and bombings that he had performed while disguised as the justice-obsessed detective.[/Spoiler]

### Atsui Chishio (厚井 知潮)
Robin Newman is a loud and hot-headed student of the prosecutor course at Themis Legal Academy.

[spoiler]Raised as and initially assumed to be a boy, Robin is actually a girl in disguise, and she had actually wanted to study to be an artist. In order to disguise her true gender, Robin adopted a masculine-coded voice and wore both the boys' uniform and an exercise brace. Despite her preference for art over law, she became the top student of the prosecutor course in her senior year.

After her true gender was deduced in court, Robin started living openly as a girl.[/spoiler]

### Ayasato Harumi (綾里 春美)
Pearl Fey is Maya Fey's cousin and the youngest known girl in the Fey clan during the time of Phoenix Wright's career. She is a prodigy among spirit mediums, having "intense spiritual power", and also having knowledge of the Fey clan that exceeds Maya's, who is expected to assume the title of Kurain Master.

Although usually a cheerful and innocent little girl, upon meeting strangers, Pearl will not say anything and will instead quickly run away. Even if a stranger greets her nicely, or even if Maya herself introduces him or her, it takes a long time to gain her trust. This is due to her mother teaching her to do this whenever a suspicious-looking person tries to talk to her. Wright has noted her speech, and even her laugh, to be refined in tone.

During the events of "Reunion, and Turnabout", "Ini Miney" was arrested the next day for the murder of Turner Grey following Wright's defense of Maya, and because of Morgan's role as an accomplice, she was sent to prison, effectively leaving Pearl Fey alone. Morgan had conspired with Miney to kill Grey and have Maya blamed for it, enabling Pearl to inherit the title of Master of Kurain. With no other known relatives, Wright and Maya essentially became Pearl's guardians, showing her the world outside of Kurain Village.

### Barashima Shingo (馬等島 晋吾)
Ted Tonate is a passionate member of the Los Angeles police bomb disposal squad. Along with a bomb obsession, Tonate's most notable personality quirk was his preferred method of communicating; via an arm-mounted keyboard and speech synthesizer.

Tonate was a corrupt officer who would secretly steal the bombs he disarmed and then sell them on the black market. He would replace the stolen bombs with models he created himself to avoid suspicion.

He was accompanied by Detective Candice Arme when he transported the disarmed and deactivated HH-3000 bomb to Courtroom No. 4, as it was to be used as evidence in Solomon Starbuck's trial for the murder of Clay Terran. Before Starbuck's trial, Tonate attempted to steal the bomb, but Arme caught him in the act and confronted him. A panicked Tonate struck her with the bomb, but Arme managed to write Tonate's ID number on the floor in her own blood before dying. Tonate noticed [url=https://vndb.org/c17497]someone[/url] take the remote switch for the bomb while this was happening, but he was too distracted by Arme's death to deal with the thief. With insufficient time to wipe away the message, Tonate used the bomb transport case to cover it and took a photograph of the bomb displayed with the Phony Phanty doll it had been placed inside of. Knowing that people would be fearful of going near a bomb, he placed Arme's body inside the transport case.

The bomb was reactivated during Starbuck's trial, but Tonate heard the sound of the bomb's activation and warned the court. The bomb destroyed the courtroom with no loss of life. Tonate was the first assigned to the scene, and used the explosion to cover up Arme's murder by taking her body from the bomb transport case to the other side of the courtroom, thus making it appear that she had died from the explosion.

[url=https://vndb.org/c53622]Juniper Woods[/url] was arrested and put on trial for the bombing and Arme's murder. In her trial, prosecutor Gaspen Payne called Tonate to testify about the HH-3000 and its reactivation. After giving his testimony, he challenged defense attorney [url=https://vndb.org/c3941]Phoenix Wright[/url] to find the truth of the case.

During Woods's trial, [url=https://vndb.org/c14085]Apollo Justice[/url], who was injured in the bombing, went to the destroyed courtroom to look for evidence while Woods was resting in the lobby. Fearing that Justice would look into the bomb transport case, Tonate sneaked up on him while he was examining the case and used some rubble to knock him unconscious. He then modified the message Arme had made by adding to it with Justice's blood to implicate Woods as Justice's assailant. 

During the second half of the trial, in which the assault was added to Woods's charges, Wright deduced Tonate's actions and accused him of both the murder of Arme and assault of Justice. Tonate attempted to counter Wright's argument with lies, but when that fell apart, he claimed the model bomb he carried was the genuine article and that he switched it with a fake before the trial. Everyone except Wright, Payne, the [url=https://vndb.org/c10835]judge[/url], and [url=https://vndb.org/c17492]Athena Cykes[/url] fled the courtroom, though Payne soon panicked and fled as well. Tonate tried to leave, warning that he would activate the bomb if he sensed he was being followed, but Wright pointed out that the bomb in the photo Tonate had taken was slightly damaged, while the bomb Tonate had was in perfect condition. Wright then opened the bomb transport case, revealing Arme's blood inside. Tonate broke down, failing to disarm his model bomb, and confessed to his crimes before being arrested.

Tonate later decided to reveal the whole truth regarding what he saw when he killed Arme and told who he thought was Detective [url=https://vndb.org/c17506]Bobby Fulbright[/url]. Wright and "Fulbright" questioned Tonate about the bombing, and Tonate revealed that he was not responsible; it was the remote switch thief. "Fulbright" showed a picture of the remaining components of the bomb, to Tonate's delight. Tonate was then taken in for further questioning by [url=https://vndb.org/c17496]Simon Blackquill[/url].

The remote switch thief was later revealed to be a spy who was known only as the "phantom" and had been masquerading as Fulbright, with the real Fulbright having been dead for a year.

Florent L'Belle was the flamboyant and narcissistic personal aide of Damian Tenma, mayor of Tenma Town. L'Belle had his own private line of beauty products called "Je suis L'Belle!", which were for his private use only, despite putting adverts for them on television. The epaulettes on his shoulders were actually cell phones used to answer calls from his business partners.

### Garyuu Kyouya (牙琉 響也)
Klavier Gavin is Apollo Justice's rival. He is the younger brother of Justice's mentor, Kristoph Gavin. He is also the lead vocalist and guitarist of his own rock band, the Gavinners. 

Unlike Phoenix Wright's usual opponents, Klavier Gavin is quite honest and friendly. He maintains his rock-star mannerisms in the courtroom, and he avoids investigative work, but he takes both of his jobs very seriously. While he is a perfectionist when it comes to his music, he is more concerned about getting the right person convicted when he is in court, which is another major difference from Wright's rivals. As well, Klavier considers his music career a hobby and his law career his real passion. 

Klavier is also somewhat like Miles Edgeworth in that he shows respect for the judge, unlike some other prosecutors who frequently abuse the judge verbally or physically, or even do his job for him. He is cool and confident, and he likes to taunt and tease Apollo Justice when the defense attorney falters. He also enjoys traveling and can speak a little Borginian.

Before his first trial, which was against Phoenix Wright ("Turnabout Succession"), Klavier's older brother, Kristoph, told him that Wright was going to present false evidence in court and gave him a witness to testify as such. Convinced that Wright was a fraud, Klavier engaged Wright rudely and taunted and cornered him until he came up with the fake evidence. Klavier sprang his trap, and Wright was exposed as a fraud. However, the defendant disappeared from the courtroom, and no verdict was given. Wright would later lose his badge in a hearing with his fellow defense attorneys. Klavier always wondered how his brother knew about the forgery ahead of time but never questioned him for the next seven years.

### Gin (ギン)
Taka is a hawk that is the animal companion of the incarcerated prosecutor Simon Blackquill, and often perches on his shoulder. Blackquill uses Taka in court to harass his opponents and witnesses. Taka is also used to relay information involving the cases Blackquill is involved in, carrying it in his beak.

Means was also a defense attorney and was known for his belief that "the end justifies the means"; he believed that a lawyer's top priority should be winning trials by any means necessary. In addition, he would accept bribes for good grades. Means graduated from Themis Legal Academy himself, being valedictorian of his graduating class.

When Themis alumna and Means's now-colleague Constance Courte became aware of someone in the faculty accepting monetary bribes for grades, she confronted Means on the stage where the upcoming school festival was to be held. Cornered, Means stabbed Courte to death with his staff. He decided to frame student Juniper Woods for the murder, but this backfired when Woods's attorney, Athena Cykes, uncovered Means's crime in court.

### Mitsurugi Reiji (御剣怜侍)
Miles Edgeworth began his career as a prosecutor at the young age of 20, and in the four years since has maintained a perfect record of guilty verdicts. Seen as a snob, his condescending nature and relentless prosecution (along with rumors of evidence and witness tampering) have earned him the name "Demon Prosecutor." He despises criminal behavior, and will do anything to get lawbreakers behind bars. And look stylish doing it.

[spoiler]Edgeworth left the prosecutor's office to find out what being a prosecutor really meant, coming to the conclusion that prosecutors were seekers of the truth, and that winning a guilty verdict wasn't all that mattered. He later returned and, by the time of the Mask☆DeMasque trials, had become known as the top prosecutor in America. He also traveled abroad to study international law, prosecuting in five other countries. He was also instrumental in finding the leader of a notorious international smuggling ring and bringing him to court.

At some point after Simeon Saint's arrest, Edgeworth was promoted to Chief Prosecutor. In October 2020, Edgeworth and his office was dealt a blow when the rookie prosecutor Simon Blackquill was accused and convicted of murder. His confession, combined with Wright's disbarment for using forged evidence a year earlier, helped to spark the so-called "dark age of the law," which despite Edgeworth's efforts, only grew worse as time passed.

Once Wright cleared his name and recruited Athena Cykes to his office, Edgeworth saw his chance. He asked Wright to come back to the world of law in order to help him clear Blackquill's name and end the dark age of the law for good. By pulling enough strings, he was able to allow Wright to pass his bar exam without any problems.[/spoiler]

### Naruhodou Minuki (成歩堂 みぬき)
Trucy Wright is a professional stage magician at the Wright Anything Agency who also serves as an investigative partner for the lawyers in the agency. 

Similarly to Wright's old assistant Maya Fey, Trucy is bright, energetic and very naïve. However, underneath all this, she is also very perceptive and intelligent, usually being able to piece things together in and out of court even more quickly than Apollo Justice does. She recently became a fan of Klavier Gavin and his band, getting a large "allowance bonus" from her father to buy a great deal of their merchandise.

She often orders "Extra-spicy" curry, just to make sure it is, in fact, spicy. However, the curry turns out to be too spicy for her, and she always wastes it. Despite her cheerful demeanor, Phoenix has said that she is hiding a deep sadness. This is understandable given that, as far as she knows, she has lost both her biological parents.

Trucy's birth name is Trucy Enigmar. Her biological father is Shadi Enigmar (a.k.a. Zak Gramarye) and her biological mother is Thalassa Gramarye (now known as Lamiroir). This makes Apollo Justice her older half-brother.

The first eight years of Trucy's life were spent with her father, magician Zak Gramarye. Her mother, Thalassa Gramarye, disappeared after an accident involving a magic trick being performed between her, Zak and his partner Valant Gramarye. Being of the Gramarye bloodline, she had the ability to perceive subtle, involuntary movements in people.

One day, Trucy's grandfather, Magnifi Gramarye, was killed, and her father was put on trial for the murder. Before the trial, Kristoph Gavin gave Trucy a piece of evidence, instructing her to give it to Phoenix Wright, Zak Gramarye's attorney. The evidence turned out to be fake; prosecutor Klavier Gavin, through a tip from his brother Kristoph, exposed the evidence as a fraud, but Zak Gramarye suddenly disappeared from the courtroom. Trucy helped her father to escape, distracting bailiff Mike Meekins with her giant puppet Mr. Hat. Zak promised Trucy that he would return one day. 

Two weeks later, Phoenix Wright called Trucy Enigmar to his office to discuss where she would live. Wright searched for relatives of Trucy to no avail, so he took her in and raised her as his own child.

Heir to a prominent family of spiritualists, Maya is Phoenix's obligatory perky sidekick during all three games.

Maya is optimistic, excitable, friendly, curious, and a fangirl for all things Steel Samurai. Like her sister she is tenacious to a fault, and very attached to "Nick" (her and her sister's name for Phoenix). Not always the brightest but loyal and outgoing.

Maya grew up in Kurain, training to be a spiritual medium. After the disappearance of her mother when she was two, and later because her sister left the village, she is destined to become the heir of her family. Though her sister left home they still remain in contact and are very close.

Maya's spiritual powers are still somewhat underdeveloped, and she has trouble calling spirits.
