Like the first game, the first trial is a tutorial one that guides the player, Phoenix Wright, into all of the elements of the Ace Attorney courtroom. This is established by having Phoenix receive amnesia due to a head trauma. The remaining three trials are united by the mysterious disappearance of prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. Justice For All plays similarly to the first Ace Attorney game as a visual novel/adventure game. While the game has been adapted from the GBA version to use the DS touch screen, none of the special investigation techniques introduced in the "Rise from the Ashes" case from the first game reappear. A small but significant change is that a player can now present the profiles of people involved with the case, in addition to the evidence in the Court Record. The player can present them either during the court room or investigative phases. Justice for All features a new gameplay concept called Psyche-Lock. Phoenix Wright has to unlock several locks that have been placed over a witness' heart in order to reveal the truth. He's dedicated to defending his innocent clients, but because he's just starting out he depends a lot on his boss and mentor, Mia Fey. She is a prodigy among spirit mediums, having "intense spiritual power", and also having knowledge of the Fey clan that exceeds Maya's, who is expected to assume the title of Kurain Master. Although usually a cheerful and innocent little girl, upon meeting strangers, Pearl will not say anything and will instead quickly run away. Even if a stranger greets her nicely, or even if Maya herself introduces him or her, it takes a long time to gain her trust. This is due to her mother teaching her to do this whenever a suspicious-looking person tries to talk to her. Wright has noted her speech, and even her laugh, to be refined in tone. She likes referring to others as "fools" (and variations thereof) and is known to carry a whip (a riding crop when she was younger) with her at all times, which she will often use on almost everybody she meets (although nearly all of her victims are male) with very little provocation. Franziska von Karma is very much like her father in court; arrogant, but also unrelenting and cold, going to extreme lengths to get a guilty verdict. She likes to use her whip to assert her dominance over other people, including those who are supposed to be her superiors. One notable difference from her father is her greater tendency to lose her cool, which is similar to Edgeworth. [SPOILER] Franziska von Karma learned of her father's loss to defense attorney Phoenix Wright and his subsequent conviction for the murder of Gregory Edgeworth. She also learned of Miles Edgeworth's losses to Wright and his subsequent disappearance. Franziska traveled to Los Angeles to face Wright in court; if she won, she would have beaten a lawyer that Edgeworth could not, getting her revenge for being "left behind". Franziska believed that perfection was the only option she had. She had to be a "genius" prosecutor, although she knew that she was not really capable of the genius her father had displayed. She viewed trials and investigations as competitions, and considered defense attorneys her enemies. Thus, when she began to lose to Phoenix Wright, she lost what she believed was the meaning of her life. When Edgeworth began to talk about the meaninglessness of win records, she resisted the idea at first, but she eventually began to understand, after which she discarded her identity as a genius living under her father's shadow. She is a well-spoken woman and has high expectations of people visiting Kurain Village to respect the traditions of the village. Morgan is extremely overprotective when it comes to Pearl, and she tends to view outsiders, especially Wright, with disdain. [SPOILER] Morgan seemed at first glance to be a calm woman who was apologetic at times for being a "lowly" branch family member, but was revealed to be cold and bitter. Dahlia Hawthorne described her as being cold, twisted, horrible, bitter and vengeful. Morgan considered Pearl her most valued treasure, and her crimes were intended to make Pearl the next Master of Kurain. Dahlia Hawthorne, however, once suggested that Morgan cared only about Pearl's ability to become the next Master. When enraged (usually when Wright doesn't refer to Maya or Pearl by their "Mystic" title), Morgan's eyes become white and blank, a trait shared by her daughter Dahlia Hawthorne when her true nature is revealed. Morgan Fey was married to a wealthy jeweler and gave birth to twin daughters, Iris and Dahlia. She was set to become the heir of the Kurain Channeling Technique, but her sister Misty Fey's superior channeling powers allowed Misty to usurp the position from Morgan. The village looked down on her for losing out to Misty and her family became a powerless branch family. Because of this, Morgan's husband left her and Kurain Village, taking both daughters with him. These events left Morgan a bitter and vengeful woman. Morgan married again and had a daughter, Pearl, who possessed amazing spiritual skills. However, her second marriage ended badly too, with her second husband leaving her soon after Pearl's birth. Morgan had always been bitter that she had been reduced to a branch family. Mimi Miney met Morgan and they came up with a plan to kill Turner Grey and to frame Maya for the murder. For Morgan, this was in order for her daughter, Pearl, to take Maya's place as the Master. About a year later, Morgan was transferred to another prison, which also happened to hold her daughter Dahlia Hawthorne, now a death-row inmate. Although initially planning to kill Hawthorne, she chose to conspire with her to murder Maya. Morgan intended for Pearl to become the next master of Kurain upon Maya's death, while Hawthorne participated in order to take revenge against Maya's late sister Mia Fey, who had gotten her convicted. The plan was for Morgan to guide Pearl towards finding some hidden instructions left for her in Kurain Village. Pearl was to bring Maya to Hazakura Temple, and once there, channel Hawthorne, who would use her body to murder Maya. Morgan considered this "my last great wish", this perhaps being the only opportunity left available to her to usurp the main family. De Killer then gave Will Powers a transceiver to give to the defense attorney Phoenix Wright for two-way communication, and subsequently demanded a complete acquittal for Engarde in one trial day, holding Fey as ransom. He kept Fey locked up in Engarde Mansion's wine cellar and informed her of his profession and the deal that he had just made with Wright. Shortly before the trial, de Killer shot the case's prosecutor, Franziska von Karma, in the shoulder, as a "present" to Wright. [SPOILER] Ini Miney had a sister, Mimi Miney, who was involved in a malpractice incident at the Grey Surgical Clinic that took place on May 2, 2016. On the 24th of the same month, Mimi and Ini were involved in a car accident in which Mimi crashed her car into a road barrier with Ini in the front passenger's seat. Ini died and Mimi's face was burned beyond recognition. Mimi decided to claim to be Ini so that her face would be reconstructed as such and she would be able to restart her life in the guise of her sister. Thus, the Ini Miney who appeared as a witness in Maya Fey's second murder trial was really Mimi Miney. He is not the real Director Hotti/Hickfield, however, as his interactions with nurses imply that he is actually a patient at the hospital, and the nurses have authority over him. He has even freely admitted to not being the real director. Nevertheless, at one point, the normally astute Miles Edgeworth believed that he was the real Director. "Hickfield" likes "examining" pretty girls and claims his speciality to be in "young, silky-smooth hottie patients". "Hickfield" also likes to spread gossip about the attractive female patients in the clinic, although he claims to "become 'embarrassed'" when talking about them, to which Wright begged him not to elaborate further. Despite the "Director"'s unique personality, he proved valuable to Wright on one occasion due to his knowledge of female patients, and Wright admitted to himself that he "could learn about how to stay on a lead" from him, however obsessed "to the max" the "Director" was. Andrews is calm and collected. She is cold, smug and has a strong-willed demeanor. [SPOILER] Prior to and during Juan Corrida's murder case, Andrews was calm and collected, but she was also emotionally unstable and had a tendency to be strongly attached to other women emotionally. Due to these problems, Andrews became emotionally dependent on her mentor Celeste Inpax. This led to her depressive episodes after Inpax's death. Following this, Andrews developed a cold, smug, strong-willed demeanor, trying to imitate Inpax to cope with her death. Her dedication to avenging her mentor fueled her cunning attempts to obtain Inpax's suicide note and frame Engarde for Corrida's murder. During the investigation of Corrida's murder, Andrews quickly developed another unhealthy emotional attachment to prosecutor Franziska von Karma. Andrews entered the entertainment business and met Celeste Inpax. The two shared a strong bond as mentor and student. Inpax was to get married, but her fiancé, Juan Corrida, called it off. It turned out that he had done so after his rival, Matt Engarde, revealed to the groom-to-be that he had previously been in a relationship with Inpax. Betrayed and heartbroken, Inpax subsequently committed suicide. After the body was discovered, a grief-stricken Andrews attempted to kill herself as well. Failing to do so, she attended counseling sessions for some time. She later became Engarde's manager, biding her time for an opportunity for revenge to present itself. Rumors circulated that Inpax had left behind a suicide note, and Corrida claimed to have retrieved the note and hidden it. Andrews began contacting Corrida, and eventually got into a personal relationship with him in order to draw closer to obtain the note. He, in turn, took advantage of the situation in an attempt to destroy Engarde's image, by leaking to the tabloid media that Engarde's manager was in a relationship with his rival. Corrida planned to use Celeste's suicide note to destroy Engarde's reputation in a press conference that he was going to hold, after the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix at the Gatewater Imperial Hotel, while pretending to be Engarde in the costume of Engarde's starring role at the time, the Nickel Samurai. However, Andrews secretly planned to burn the note to preserve Inpax's dignity. After Engarde's Nickel Samurai beat Corrida's Jammin' Ninja in the Grand Prix, Andrews and Engarde ate a meal together in his hotel room. Engarde then had a nap to prepare for the post-ceremony stage show, while Andrews took the opportunity to visit Corrida and prepare for Corrida's concocted press conference. After crossing the hallway to Corrida's hotel room, she found him sitting in a chair in his Jammin' Ninja costume. After pouring a glass of tomato juice for him, she suddenly realized that he was dead, breaking a vase in her shock. Andrews decided to tamper with the crime scene to implicate Engarde as the killer. Before she left, she absentmindedly picked up a white card with a pink conch on it. Unlike his colleagues in the circus, Acro can see the "diamond shining in [Galactica's] soul", namely his pride as a performer, and he feels that this is something lacking from the others until the magician showed up. He does admit to still having some issues with him, however. [SPOILER] Bat had developed a crush on the ringmaster's daughter, Regina Berry. The two often played pranks on one another. One day, Bat sprinkled some pepper on Regina. The resulting sneezing fit was such that even onlookers could not help but laugh. Regina thought it would be funny to get him back with the same trick, so she doused a scarf in pepper and gave it to the young acrobat as a gift, who eagerly wore it. During practice on that same day, Bat suddenly made a bet with Regina that, if he could put his head inside the mouth of Léon, the circus lion, then she would have to go on a date to the movies with him. Everyone thought that Bat was being stupid, but since the lion was old and had much experience in doing that very trick, nobody stopped him. Unfortunately, due to Bat's pepper-laced scarf, the lion sneezed, consequently closing his jaws on the young man's head. Acro leaped towards the lion to try to save his little brother, only for the lion to turn on him. The incident caused Bat to suffer severe brain damage and lapse into a coma, while Acro's legs were paralyzed, confining him to a wheelchair. Although the incident had been entirely accidental, Regina never seemed to grasp the seriousness of what had happened to Bat. This was because her father had told her after her mother's death that people became stars when they died. Acro knew that she had never intended for anything bad to happen, having only wanted to make his brother sneeze a few times. However, Regina's continuing innocent belief that Bat had become a star became unbearable, and eventually, Acro decided to end it all. Six months after the accident, Acro planted a note into Regina's pocket during one of her daily visits. The note anonymously told "the murderer" that the author had conclusive evidence of what had taken place and that she should be at the lodging house plaza at 10:00 p.m. that night. Using a pulley system, he lowered a large wooden box containing a bottle of pepper (the "evidence" from the incident) from his window to the courtyard below. He then positioned a bust of circus magician Max Galactica, which Money had stolen, above the box. The box was made in such a way that whomever tried to pick it up would have to squat, guaranteeing that the victim's head would be in the perfect position for a killing blow from the bust. All Acro had to do was wait for the sounds of someone trying to lift the box, release the rope in order to kill "the murderer", then hoist the bust back up to his room. The plan quickly fell apart, however, since Regina had no idea what the note was about, or even that it was intended for her, and had instead posted it on the cafeteria's bulletin board. Although other circus staff members saw it, only Russell seemed to know what it meant. He went to the courtyard in her stead, disguised in Galactica's trademark hat and cloak. Since Acro could not see very far down outside his window due to his confinement to a wheelchair, he had no idea who it was outside the window. When Acro saw the cloak on the bust, he didn't know how it got there. However, since it was incriminating evidence, he burned it and threw the ashes away. The bust, on the other hand, could not be disposed of so easily, and so he kept it in his room. Acro was racked with guilt for his crime. Instead of killing the intended target, he had killed the ringmaster, who had shown him nothing but kindness and generosity. At first, he contemplated suicide, then thought about giving himself up. In the end, he endeavored not to give up. If he died or was incarcerated, then no one would be left to look after Bat. He therefore went along with the police's suspicion of Galactica. In the courtroom, Acro took the stand and gave his testimony. Through pressing statements and finding contradictions, Wright was gradually able to figure out what had happened on the night of the murder and, eventually, that the murder weapon was under Acro's blanket. Finally being found out, Acro confessed to the crime and openly wept for murdering the man who had become like a father to him. He also apologized to Galactica for framing him. He claimed that she had mixed up the medications, which had resulted in the deaths. On May 24th, she and her sister were involved in a car accident, resulting in the nurse's death. Some believed that Grey was responsible for the accident. A year later, the clinic is doing badly. Fewer and fewer people are attending. In desperation, Grey asked Ini Miney (who was studying the occult at college) about hiring a spirit medium to call the nurse's spirit, and Ini recommended Maya Fey, future Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique. He intends to make the nurse take the blame for the malpractice incident by signing a written confession. Grey also wants her to write a statement that her death was due to her own negligence and not due to him. Grey is the type of person who likes to pass the blame onto others, whether it be his clinic staff or even the TV weather girl. He doesn't care that the nurse had died or even that 14 of his patients had died. He is only upset that she had died before taking the blame. He comes across as a rather irritable and self-important individual. Grey also tended to try and out-compete people. Nevertheless, he is a skilled surgeon and is well known to the public, although that is mainly because of his appearance in various tabloid shows due to the malpractice incident. [SPOILER] Two days before the channeling, Grey bought a pistol on the black market, in case the spirit proved to be violent. Ini was actually Mimi, who had tricked her surgeons into giving her Ini's face. Because of this, Fey's channeling would fail if it proceeded, and Mimi feared that Grey would figure out the truth. After the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix was over, Engarde met up with de Killer, who disguised himself as a bellboy, and paid him as per their contract. De Killer then contacted Edgeworth out of court seeking to testify, telling Edgeworth that his client was indeed Matt Engarde. The radio transceiver was brought to the witness stand, but de Killer betrayed Edgeworth and named Andrews as his client. However, Wright exposed contradictory details in the assassin's claims about his supposed client, which caused de Killer to realize what the attorney was doing and cut communications. He wrote the name "Maggie" in the sand with Prince's right hand, not knowing how to spell Byrde's name and that Prince was left-handed. Despite this, Byrde was arrested for the murder. Hart is often single-minded in the pursuit of her goals and gets aggravated if she thinks people are mocking her or her homeland. Although she was a paranormal photographer at one point, she is "really bad when it comes to blood and ghosts and stuff", suggesting her want to leap into situations without forethought. Hart also has a habit of changing her job each time Wright sees her. However, it usually incorporates her photography abilities. [SPOILER] Phoenix Wright's first encounter with the fiery red-head was during "Turnabout Goodbyes". She had heard about Gourdy and planned to capture a photograph of the beast. Going by an article in the local newspaper, Hart set up a camera on the shore of Gourd Lake that was set to respond to loud noises. She then pretended to be a college student taking photographs of meteor showers so as to throw off any "shutterbugs" that might try to steal her scoop. The next time Wright encountered Hart was a year later in Kurain Village. She was a self-styled "paranormal photographer" and was in search of another big scoop. She was present outside Fey Manor's Channeling Chamber when Turner Grey was shot and dashed into the room with Wright to find what appeared to be a possessed Maya Fey covered in blood, with the dead body of Grey lying in his own blood. Hart quickly snapped a couple of photographs (despite protests from Wright) before being herded from the room by Morgan Fey. Lotta Hart appeared at the Gatewater Imperial Hotel during the Hero of Heroes Grand Prix (in the events of "Farewell, My Turnabout") in order to get a tabloid scoop on the scandal between Adrian Andrews and Juan Corrida. He takes every opportunity to use his wristwatch cell phone to ask his manager, Adrian Andrews, about even the most basic decisions. He isn't a very tactful speaker, and had the habit of addressing people as "dude", calling Wright "Mister Lawyer dude". However, Engarde was also an infamous playboy who used his boyish charm and seemingly pleasant attitude to gain popularity with women. He justified his actions by calling it "just a game." When it came to rival Juan Corrida, he was known for being extremely competitive. [SPOILER]Engarde's seemingly harmless and flaky persona, however, was only a façade, designed to divert negative attention away from him so that no one would suspect him of any wrongdoing. The assassin first tried to infiltrate the president's bodyguards by disguising himself as one. He managed to gather a good amount of information on the president's protection, including the names of the leader and sub-leader of the guards, and soon struck. Although the leader of the bodyguards, a man called Gai Tojiro, noticed de Killer, by that time the assassin had managed to get close to his target. The assassin managed to easily overpower most of the bodyguards, beginning with the sub-leader Manosuke Naitō, whom he grabbed by the throat so hard that the latter was later forced to wear a neck brace and was unable to turn his head right. Unfortunately for de Killer, Gai Tojiro proved far more formidable, as he quickly grabbed, twisted and shot the assassin's left arm. When Corrida found the dead Inpax, he forged a suicide note and kept it in his person, preparing for an opportunity to ruin Engarde with the note. Corrida began to concoct a plan for revenge against Engarde with Adrian Andrews, who was Engarde's manager and Inpax's protege. Tabloid papers witnessing them together reported that Corrida and Andrews were in a scandalous relationship. Two years after Inpax's death, the Jammin' Ninja participated in the third annual Grand Prix, and Corrida's plan to ruin Engarde was set into motion. In 2016, Mimi Miney was involved in a malpractice incident at the Grey Surgical Clinic, which resulted in the deaths of 14 patients. Grey claimed that she had mixed up the patient's medication, which was later confirmed by Mimi herself. The malpractice incident attracted much attention from the world's media, appearing in talk shows, magazines, tabloids and the like. This continued for weeks. Over two weeks after the malpractice incident, Mimi was involved in a car crash with her sister Ini. This resulted in Ini's death and Mimi's face becoming so badly burnt that she was unrecognizable. She was transferred from the general hospital to the Hotti Clinic for reconstructive surgery, arriving with her entire body wrapped in bandages and her arm in a cast. Using her dead sister's driver's license, Mimi decided to take Ini's identity and start a new life. One day, Bat made a bet with Regina that if he successfully stuck his head into a lion's mouth, Regina would go on a date with him. Unfortunately, earlier that day, Regina had covered Bat's scarf with pepper to make him sneeze. Bat didn't sneeze, but when he stuck his head into the lion's mouth, the lion sneezed and bit Bat, critically wounding him. His older brother, Acro, tried to wrestle the lion off Bat, but was injured and became paralyzed in the process. Bat remained in a coma, and Acro was confined to a wheelchair. Regina, being too naive to understand what really happened to Bat, quickly got over him and moved on. Galactica was able to negotiate a considerable raise with Russell six months after the Léon incident. A week after the pay raise, an anonymous threatening letter, given to the innocent Regina by Acro in secret, appeared on the bulletin board, calling out the "killer" from six months ago. Fearful, Russell decided to meet the sender in Regina's stead. That night, he talked with Galactica about an incident at breakfast in which the magician had hit Woodman over the head with a bottle. Galactica took this opportunity to discuss with Russell his proposal to marry Regina.
