## Description
Ar tonelico takes place in the region of Sol Ciel, upon a huge tower that rises above a sea of deadly plasma that swallowed the surface world in a disaster centuries past. This is where the series gets its name: Ar tonelico is the name of that tower. As well as humans, the tower is home to a race of human-like artificial beings named Reyvateils, who can communicate with the tower by singing songs to cast magic.

The story starts in the city of Platina, during an outbreak of enemy creatures called Viruses. The protagonist, a Knight of Elemia named Lyner Barsett, goes to investigate with fellow knight Ayatane, and the tower administrator, Shurelia. Unfortunately, they rapidly discover that the Viruses are able to turn intangible, rendering normal defeat impossible. Shurelia therefore sends Lyner on a quest for the only thing that can help them: the Hymn Crystal Purger. Taking an airship, he travels down to the Wings of Horus, the floating continent that surrounds the tower. More accurately, he crashes thanks to an attack from a dragon, which complicates matters extremely.

In the process of searching for the crystal and a way to repair his airship, he meets and teams up with a number of people, including two Reyvateils. First is the shy Aurica, who healed his injuries after his crash. Second is the more outspoken Misha, actually his forgotten childhood friend. But there's one problem - Misha looks much younger than she should be. Aside from those two are the wanderer Jack, the local church knight Radolf, and the airship grathmelder Krusche. As the story progresses, Lyner and his comrades not only try to find the Hymn Crystal and fix Lyner's airship, but discover the reason for Misha's youthful appearance, and the source of the recent Virus outbreak.

## Characters
### Lyner Barsett (ライナー・バルセルト)
A very energetic young man with an adventurer's spirit. Although he often overreacts, he is hesitant (or just indecisive) when it comes to relationships, and doesn't react well when girls take the initiative. He's a simple guy who hates dishonest people. He has a strong sense of responsibility, which often gets him in trouble.

He was born in the city of Platina in the upper levels of the tower. His father is the current Commander of Platina, who tries to teach him the ways of politics. However, Lyner has no interest in politics whatsoever, and decided to pick up the sword to search for adventure.

He was acknowledged for his great potential, and was selected to become a Knight of Elemia and protect Shurelia, the administrator of the tower. He continues to serve Shurelia, helping to defeat the Viruses within the tower.

### Aurica Nestmile (オリカ・ネストミール)
Aurica used to be a cheerful and kind person, but because of the many traumas in her past, her expressions tend to be sad and gloomy.

She is a Reyvateil, a person who has the power to change sound into magic. More specifically, she is a mix between a Reyvateil and a human, known as a Third Generation Reyvateil.

Her parents passed away a few years ago during an attack on Skuwat Village. She then joined the Elemia Church, who enshrined the Trio of Elemia. She decided to work there as a candidate for the Holy Maiden, but because she was not very talented, she did not fare very well. ### Don Leon (どんすけ)
Don Leon is Aurica's mind guardian. He lives in the world inside Aurica's mind, also called her "Soulspace" or "Cosmosphere".

Don Leon is Aurica's knight. He is very loyal to her, but also headstrong. Because Aurica is hurt so often, he is always trying hard to protect her. He is originally distrusting towards Lyner, but he is helpful inside Aurica's Cosmosphere.

He looks like a stuffed lion with a crimson mantle, a sword on his hip, and a casserole pan on his head.

### Hama (波摩)

Hama will not open her heart to you at first because of some past memories. Lyner must solve the mystery to the memories and Misha's past to find out about Hama's true thoughts.

She appears as a little girl with cat ears on her head, dressed in Japanese robes, and holding an ocarina.

A wandering gunman. No one knows where he came from or what he's up to. 

He travels the world, working for anyone who will hire him. That's probably why he knows so much about different places and events.

Jack seems to have his own goal for his journey, but he hasn't told anyone about it. For some reason, he actually tries to hang around Lyner during his travels.

He loves women, and even Lyner is amazed at how straightforward he is about it. He is a dependable, big brother type, to the point where he will do whatever it takes to protect his friends.

She was born into a large family, and grew up unsupervised. Although she doesn't like dressing up too girly, she secretly admires it. She is kind of selfish and no-nonsense when it comes to money.

### Misha Arsellec Lune (彌紗・アルトセルク・リューン)
Misha is an honest and single-minded girl at heart. Though she acts more mature than she looks, you can't deny that she's quite childish.

She is a Reyvateil, a person who has the power to change sound into magic. More specifically, she is a very rare kind, called a Pureblooded β-type. Because of this, she has very strong, innate powers.

Despite her looks, she is bright, intelligent, and actually quite good at cooking. With her ability to calmly analyze her surroundings, she can do anything skillfully, but she has horrible physical reflexes (she's a klutz). She is also afraid of heights.

### Radolf Schneizen (ラードルフ・シュナイゼン)
A resident of the Lower World, and a Cardinal of the Elemia Church. His skills are among the best in the Church, especially with his sword.

Sympathizing with the Church's beliefs that "people should live in peace and harmony", he joined the Church when he was 16. He had a natural talent with the sword, and in five years, climbed to the highest rank of commander (Cardinal) within the knights of the Church.

A serious guy who takes pride in the happiness and protection that the Church's missions bring to the people. He can be stubborn at times, and he won't go back on his word. Unlike most other leaders in the Church, he doesn't believe that the Goddesses' descent is a priority.

### Ayatane Michitaka (絢胤 箕嵩)
Ayatane Michitaka is Lyner's best friend and a fellow Knight of Elemia. He is a calm, pacifistic young man who is kind and charming to everyone, prefers to approach and solve all problems with optimism, and is rarely seen without a smile on his face.
 
He also, rather strangely, enjoys doing domestic things such as cooking and cleaning, and dislikes crowds and fighting. Like Lyner, he fights directly under Shurelia, but unlike Lyner he seems to have deep feelings for Shurelia that border on romantic love, and he constantly worries about her no matter how much he watches over her.

### Bishop Falss (ファルス司祭)
A High priest of the Elemia Church. He acts as the leader of all the churches on each floating island., including Nemo. He was not originally from the area, but ever since he joined the Elemia Church, people called him the Saint of Elemia Church. After 15 years, he reached the top of the Church's heirarchy.

He is full of affection and believes the goal of the Church is to descend the goddess of the Trio of Elemia to lead people to happiness.

### Bourd Rade (ボルド・レード)
The second-in-command of the Tenba conglomerate. Formerly just a strong warrior and an expert in researching ruins. He was hired for his skills, and becomes a member of Tenba's ruins search team. He thinks of Reyvateil as swappable weapons and does not treat them as people. This causes clashes between him and [url=/c3681]Lyner[/url], who respects Reyvateils as people.

He is an ambitious warrior who is the type to push over with sheer power rather than with skill. His armour is derived from both Tenba's technology and Lost Technology.

She has many fans in Nemo, and she gets new customers everyday. Claire believes that songs should be sung for the common people, and would never sing songs that harm others. She wants her songs to touch the hearts of people.

### Flute Ross Loria (フラウト・ロス・ロリア)
The leader of Em Pheyna, the town of the Teru Tribe. He follows and protects the Oath of Elemia. Flute respects Tastiella, who is very knowledgeable, and will go to her for advice for any significant event.

Although the Teru are allied friends with the Apostles of Elemia, it has been a long time since they have communicated. They no longer know of each others' situation or existence. They assume that no unusual events is good, and live their lives peacefully.

### Leard Barsett (レアード・バルセルト)
The commander of Platina, the Upper World of the tower. His political skills allowed him to go straight up the political ladder to his current position. He has a solid popularity among the people of Platina.

Leard is Lyner's father. He wants Lyner to succeed him, so he has tried to teach Lyner the ways of politics since he was small. However, Lyner had a strong yearning for adventure, and picked the sword over the pen.

Leard was very disappointed by this, and their relationship has been awkward since. He still has hope that Lyner might become interested in politics, but lyner has no intention, and they always end up fighting.

A child of the Teru tribe who lives in Em Pheyna. She is a spellcaster called a Jemina, allowing her to freely teleport around the tower. She uses these abilities to run a business that searches the tower for items.

Because of her treatment as a tool by humans, she loathed them, and planned to exterminate them to create a world only for Reyvateils. Even after she was sealed by Shurelia and Tastiella, she retained her hatred for humans.

[spoiler]Tastiella was originally a high priestess of Em Pheyna during the Second Era. According to Shurelia, she sacrificed herself in order to seal Mir. She now acts as the Crescent Chronicle's terminal to oversee the physical world and therefore can only move within Em Pheyna and the Crescent Chronicle. Her "body" is severely damaged later in the game, but she manages to oversee the end of Lyner's journey and congratulate him, before bidding farewell and disappearing, thus dying as she wished.
