Although a grown man, he still has a certain naive boyishness to him, most evident in his passion for romantic tales and appetite for chasing his dreams. However, this also comes with an equivalent amount of immaturity, making him somewhat troublesome to deal with.
He believes that most any circumstance he finds himself in will sort itself out, an optimistic creed that often sees him casually throwing himself into difficult situations, and he remains impressively unbothered even on those occasions he does find himself in trouble, often managing to slip out of danger with nary a dent in his usual carefree attitude. That he's made it this far unscathed is largely owed to sheer luck, although he remains blissfully unaware of this.

He is currently in Japan seeking mermaid flesh, which is believed to grant immortality. His reason is simple: a fascination with the occult, a pursuit he feels is worthy of devoting his entire life to. Indeed, he is primarily driven by his pursuit of romantic ideals—if he finds something suitably inspiring, he will readily risk his life for it, and is willing to change his views just as quickly for the same.
Avi's interest in the occult was born when he discovered his great-grandmother's vast collection of mysterious occult artifacts in the storage of his family home in America. Among them was a mermaid mummy, which yielded a mysterious map when taken apart—a discovery which captivated his imagination and led to his current quest.
This great-grandmother happened to be a relative of the main Lunarlight family in England, albeit one who had chosen not to succeed the family estate. After discovering this through independent research into his lineage, Avi made contact with the Lunarlight family, and continues to maintain a secret correspondence with them to this day.

After losing his [url=/c164631]parents[/url] in the large-scale maritime accident five years ago, he was raised by his grandmother, veteran ama diver [url=/c164210]Tsuyu Minakuchi[/url]. He briefly found work at a seafood processing plant in Toba after graduating high school earlier in the year, but upon hearing that Tsuyu had injured her leg, forcing her to retire from diving and causing difficulties in her daily life, he quit his job after only three months and returned to Kameshima.
At present, he is caring for Tsuyu while looking for work on Kameshima, and he has recently made the decision to follow in Tsuyu's footsteps and become an ama diver himself. Although he has been unable to bring himself to enter the sea since the disaster five years ago, he is hoping that his previous aptitude for swimming will lend itself to a natural talent for ama diving.

Quiet and introverted as a child, he began to show a more animated side upon befriending [url=/c163941]Azami Kumoi[/url], a boy his same age, and it eventually became a common sight to see them getting up to mischief together.
Although the maritime disaster five years ago saw a drastic shift in the way most of Kameshima's inhabitants treated Yuza, Azami alone continued to treat him the same. Even now, it is not uncommon for Azami to find himself caught up in Yuza's eccentric exploits, but he is always quick to laugh and follow his lead.

A woman who balances her work as a housewife with her position as a full-time employee of the Paranormal Affairs Bureau, a secret department within the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. Although the very image of a refined lady in appearance, she has a surprisingly free-spirited personality and tends to find anything she has no interest in too bothersome to take seriously. Things that do catch her attention, on the other hand, often command all of it, and she will actively involve herself in looking into them.
She utterly adores her husband, swooning in admiration whenever the topic turns to him, and she is also viewed with affection by her coworkers, who call her "ma'am."

Out of the five current full-time members of the Paranormal Affairs Bureau, Yumeko alone lacks any particular metaphysical abilities despite possessing a meager degree of spirit sense. Even so, she was chosen to be part of the Bureau's elite unit for very particular reasons — reasons known only to a handful of people close to her.
There was once one other member of the Bureau who had no paranormal powers to speak of —veteran police detective [url=/c124600]Tetsuo Tsutsumi[/url]— and the two occasionally worked on investigations together. When dispatched on assignments now, she always pairs up with freelance psychic detective [url=/c163968]Sodo Kiryu[/url], leaving all paranormal-related procedures —and often her much-despised paperwork— to him.
Yumeko's husband is also a psychic by the name of Ittensai Shiki, and Sodo is his cherished protégé.

Yumeko was formerly a mermaid by the name of Nagame. Unlike her more serious compatriots, [url=/c164768]Hayase[/url] and [url=/c164772]Sobae[/url], Nagame was free-spirited by nature and held a keen interest in both humans and the mortal world. She was even known to break the rules to sneak out and observe human society — something which often put her at odds with the other two mermaids and led to her being viewed as something of a maverick.
When the entrance to Ryugu was sealed 400 years ago to suppress the Curse of the Raging Waves —rendering the remaining mermaids unable to return home— Sobae was overcome by grief; however, Nagame was thrilled, and seized the opportunity to travel the world at her leisure, which deepened the rift between her and Sobae.
For the next 350 years, Nagame bore witness to the lives of countless humans around the globe, from every culture and era, and her yearning for life in human society continued to grow. She was particularly enamored by the concepts of marriage and becoming a bride, finding the idea of pledging one's life to someone and living hand-in-hand with them from then on enthralling — it was this she found herself longing for above all else.

Nagame the mermaid became Ittensai Shiki's human wife, Yumeko Shiki, a name given to her by Ittensai himself. Although the process of gaining a human body meant she lost many of the memories and abilities she had possessed during her time as a mermaid, she retained all the memories and feelings from her time spent with Ittensai, which was more than enough for Yumeko.
Since then, Yumeko has enjoyed a fulfilling life, with her human nature —and her relationship with Ittensai— bringing her immense joy. Because of this, she is insistent that her primary identity be that of a housewife, to the extent that she always chooses clothing that will allow her return to tackling housework at a moment's notice.
However, the human body she has gained still differs from those of regular humans: although she appears to age slowly compared to those around her, it is entirely unknown how long her lifespan will end up being.
Following her rebirth as a human, Yumeko decided to pay a visit to Sobae in the depths of Ise Bay to explain her decision and introduce her partner. Abandoning her form as a mermaid to become human was a grave violation of the rules they were bound to, and she expected Sobae to receive the news with utter contempt if not sever her ties with Yumeko completely. But her expectations were pleasantly subverted: Sobae herself had since forged her own deep bond of love and trust with [url=/c164631]Mare Minakuchi[/url] —one that similarly transcended their respective species— and understood her feelings, thanking her for introducing Ittensai to her. However, Sobae never showed herself to Yumeko again after that.[/spoiler]

Roughly three months ago, Sato suddenly arrived on Kameshima claiming that she was the child of a relative of the Wakamuras. She showed no sign of attending school or doing any sort of work, instead spending her days holed up in the Wakamura household, leading many islanders to wonder just who she is and what she's doing there.
Those who know about Wakamura's high-interest moneylending behind the scenes speculate that she might be the daughter of one of his borrowers, sent to work as a domestic servant to pay off a debt, but Sato herself is extremely easygoing and doesn't seem to be bothered by the endless rumors.
A huge television fan, she spends much of her spare time glued to the set in the Wakamura household, with her most recent obsessions being soap operas and two-hour thrillers. However, she isn't all that fond of period dramas.
She is good friends with [url=/c163969]Tsukasa Awao[/url], who is close to her in age, and the two can often be seen enjoying themselves wandering the island together.

Circe is the third daughter of [url=/c165562]Ciara Lunarlight[/url], the current head of the matrilineal Lunarlight family, a long line of exorcists based in England. Along with her two older sisters, she has received a specialized education in exorcism ever since she was a child, and is currently in training as an apprentice.
As the beings known as "demons" in the West ultimately share the same root cause as harmful supernatural phenomena in the East —the spirits of the dead, strong thoughts, and curses— what she does as an exorcist is fundamentally the same as what Japanese psychics do, with only the methods and terminology differing.

Although she is supposed to be in the care of the Paranormal Affairs Bureau —a confidential Japanese institute— during her time in Japan, Circe has been spending more time traveling around the country sightseeing than working through her training curriculum. The supervisor in charge of her training has all but given up on trying to manage her as a result, resolving to keep an eye on her but otherwise not interfere; as such, she's afforded a relatively high level of freedom.

Circe is an ardent fan of [url=/c124612]Mio Kurosuzu[/url], a girl with potent spirit sense and her senior in the industry in Japan. She harbors both strong admiration and strong feelings of rivalry towards her in equal measure, and it is not uncommon for her to end up a babbling mess when then topic turns to the other girl. She treasures the photograph she had taken with Mio upon first meeting her in Tokyo, and keeps it with her at all times.

Although he has a calm and taciturn personality and is possessed of a sharp mind, he is surprisingly sensitive by nature; however, this trait does not extend to mercy towards spirits and other phenomena, which he often ends up subduing by force.

Sodo's family runs a small shrine dedicated to a certain onmyoji from the Sengoku period. This onmyoji is said to be an ancestor of the Kiryu family, which may explain why their bloodline has produced many individuals with a strong spirit sense over the years.
Sodo was born with an exceptionally potent spirit sense even within his lineage, leading to his abilities catching the attention of legendary psychic [url=/c165504]Ittensai Shiki[/url] when he was eight years old. Ittensai subsequently took him under his wing as his protégé, and Sodo underwent rigorous training under his watchful eye.

His [url=/c165566]father[/url] was a fisherman, and he accompanied him out to sea on his boat from a very young age. As a result, he grew up never doubting that he, too, would one day become a fisherman. After his father died in a maritime disaster five years ago, his mother —an ama diver— took on the responsibility of raising Azami and his much younger brother on her own.
During the closed season for diving, when his mother worked on the mainland, Azami was responsible for looking after his brother. After graduating middle school, he refused his mother's suggestion to attend high school and quickly obtained a 4th-class boat pilot license while helping with fishing around the island. He is now able to take his father's small fishing boat, the Saiun-Maru, out on fishing trips on his own.

He has a frank, easygoing relationship with Yuza, his childhood friend, and the two often get up to mischief together. Although he was happy for Yuza when he left to attend high school on the mainland and later found a job there, he also felt somewhat lonely. For this reason, he secretly welcomed the news that Yuza would be leaving his job and returning to Kameshima to take care of [url=/c164210]his grandmother[/url].

### Nakagoshi Kuiru (名河越 懺)
The current chief of Paranormal Affairs is a man named Kuiru Nakagoshi. He was born to a family of psychics who have been involved in keeping the world safe from paranormal phenomena for generations, and has served as [url=/c124612]Mio Kurosuzu[/url]'s mentor since discovering her. Kuiru is an elusive figure — very few have met him in person, and he is rarely seen in his office. It is said that this is because he has oft been the target of curses, however some theorize that it is in fact because Kuiru is not actually of flesh and blood at all. His seat in his office is usually occupied by a nue, a legendary creature found in Japanese folklore. The nue resembles an ordinary White's thrush and acts as Kuiru's messenger, leading to bizarre scenes of police officers earnestly reporting their findings to a bird.
The term "Nakagoshi case" serves as a code name used to refer to cases under investigation by Paranormal Affairs.

Shogo graduated from a famous private university in Tokyo, and has since settled into an apolitical mindset —common among those of his generation— with no strong ideas and no particular dissatisfaction with the world as it develops around him. He is content to just go with the flow, having stumbled into his current position by pure chance, and it is safe to assume he will follow the stereotypical path of working his way up the ladder, starting a family, and remaining at the same company until retirement.
He plays folk guitar as a hobby and is currently looking for a girlfriend.
