## Characters
### Amae Koromo (天江 衣)
Koromo is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School and the team's ace player. Koromo's ability as a player is famous, so much that she is considered one of the national-class monsters. She is the key player that brought an end to Kazekoshi Girls' High School's winning streak a year before the start of the current storyline. She is feared by friend and foe alike; her special ability can prevent opponents from tenpai, but her primary ability is to win via haitei raoyue (winning with the last tile). This ability is further enhanced the close it is to a full moon. Winning in this manner tends to invoke despair in opponents as they appear helpless to stop the eventual win at the very end.

Koromo boasts an unusually literary manner of speech, resembling that of nineteenth century philosophers or writers, such as Edgar Allan Poe or even Mark Twain, despite Saki’s setting taking place decades in the future. On a few occasions, she has even completely made up words devoid of any meaning.

Koromo has three distinctive “sides” depending on her mood; the first being, In correspondence with her childish appearance, the fact that her mood can sometimes make complete U-turns from the traits as stated above, prompting her to act hyperactive, childish, and carefree at completely unrelated or random moments; it is implied several times throughout the series that is very easy to make Koromo happy. Her second side reveals a much darker, drearier part of her personality; oftentimes she will wander aimlessly in the town or place she’s in, lost in her own thoughts, feeling alone and depressed. She blames this on the loss of her parents years before the start of the current storyline, who raised her, believing that her only self-worth is through mahjong which she believes  is worthless anyway and she initially considers herself incapable of finding a person in the world who enjoys the game with her.

Her third side is perhaps the most ferocious; whilst playing mahjong, she gives away her other moods which depending on the scenario can either be happy-go-lucky or reclusive and distant, and takes her turn being violent and disdainful, oftentimes making cruel, somewhat disturbing comments about her opponents; her behavior is directly influenced by the full moon, which she becomes more erratic and her personality more jagged under. In addition, Koromo does not consider herself human, despite her appearance saying otherwise.

Due to these reasons, it’s speculated that Koromo possibly has Bipolar disorder, as a result of her consistent moodswings.

### Bundou Seika (文堂 星夏)
Seika is a first-year at Kazekoshi Girls' High School and a member of the Mahjong Club, who was able to move up into the Mahjong Club's regulars in a mere two months. Previously ranked 78th in the club, she worked her way up to 5th before the tournament thus earning a spot on the team. Always seen with her eyes closed, Bundou tends to worry before and during her matches. However, after the prefectural tournament Bundou has been shown to have more confidence in herself, going so far as to say that her and Kazekoshi will be going to the nationals next year. One of her hobbies include collecting the mahjong stars series trading cards.

### Fukabori Sumiyo (深堀 純代)
Sumiyo is a second-year at Kazekoshi Girls' High School. She is a rather quiet individual and rarely talks outside of her matches. She is not shown doing much but standing in the background with her teammates.

### Fukuji Mihoko (福路 美穂子)
A third-year at Kazekoshi Girls' High School, Mihoko is the captain and ace of their mahjong team. She has heterochromia and because of her self-consciousness, she opens her right eye to no one, not even her teammates. She has a very kind nature, being nice to everyone she meets regardless of who they may be; her kindness extends even to the point where she offers [url=/c34911]Yuuki[/url], an opposing player from the contending school team Kiyosumi, her bento so that she would calm down. She even becomes very teary when her teammates help her out, as she feels that it was her fault that her teammates had to work in her place because it was her responsibility. She is useless when it comes to technology.

Mihoko also admires [url=/c35287]Hisa[/url], which is due to a tournament three years ago. Due to her talent, she unknowingly kept her right eye open the whole time and when she tried to hide it, Hisa complemented her instead, stating that her right eye was "pretty".

As Kazekoshi's ace, Mihoko is a very skillful player. Her special ability comes when she opens her right eye: this allows her to calculate how the game progresses with excellent accuracy. By taking into account how players organise and physically discard their tiles, she can predict opponents' hands with amazing precision, even being able to guess what yaku the opponent has, how long they've been in tenpai, or which tiles would be useful for them to use. Even without her eye, she is a very skillful player, not to mention she is ranked the number #1 player in her school.

### Haramura Nodoka (原村 和)
Nodoka is a first-year student at Kiyosumi High School in Nagano Prefecture and a protagonist of the manga. She has played online mahjong since a young girl and develops a eventually passion for it. Her father, who works as an attorney, disapproves of Nodoka's interest but does not prohibit it. Because of her mother's work assignment, her family usually moves to a different city every two to three years. She moves to Nara Prefecture prior to her final year in elementary school and soon enters Achiga Girls' Academy for middle school. She was the previous year's National Middle School Individual Champion.

Nodoka always carries her penguin plushie due to [url=/c35287]Hisa's[/url] recommendation in their first training camp, affectionately named Etopen, to give her a sense of calmness when playing mahjong. 

Nodoka plays a strictly digital style game and not does she only think about winning percentages, she factors in expected values for her winning hands as well. Nodoka's true strength in mahjong lies within her online persona. Using the pseudonym "Nodocchi", her winning record surpasses that of most professional players. Her opponents have observed that she makes makes the most complex decisions within a split second and rarely makes mistakes in her plays, if ever. While holding Etopen, she can go into "Nodocchi Mode" even outside digital Mahjong, but this is also her weakness: she views the current game as a digital game, regardless of whether or not it actually is; this allows her to completely ignore the presence of her opponents, for better or worse. She begins making decisions very quickly and can confuse players who sense their opponent's tenpai, as she seems to play like a robot, not a person.

Nodoka's personality is that of a "proper lady" as noted by [url=/c35288]Mako[/url]. She is very logical but can be a bit childish as she cannot sleep without her penguin plushie. She is distant with [url=/c34904]Saki[/url] at first but over time becomes extremely close to her. Nodoka is also very stubborn and despite being logical rushes into things without thinking. She is sensitive when talking about her breasts with others. Nodoka also has a pragmatic view of mahjong: she does not believe in supernatural powers and stubbornly rejects any chance of them happening.

### Ikeda Kana (池田 華菜)
Kana is a second-year at Kazekoshi Girls' High School and a member of the mahjong team who plays as the team's captain. She has triplet younger sisters who look exactly like her. She is a cheerful, cat-like girl and has great confidence in her mahjong skill. Kana is shown to be very fond of [url=/c35500]Mihoko[/url] and loves to be petted by her. She has proclaimed that there is none who is more annoying than she is. She has also shown to be very stubborn. Kana is very cat-like, sprouting ears and a tail at any given time, and she also purrs. Despite this, she is often scolded and almost even abused by their coach for her minor mistakes.

### Inoue Jun (井上 純)
Jun is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School. She is quite popular among girls, while other team members often tease her male-like traits. Hajime states that Jun is like the father of their family.

Jun is also incredibly lazy. Somewhat of a pessimist, she is cynical and snide though still has a noticeable sense of humor. She is also somewhat analytical, as she was able to tell that Saki Miyanaga wasn't yet dead, and still putting up a fight against Koromo.

Jun has a heightened sense of the flow on the board, allowing her to change things into her favor including, but not limited to disabling the tiles her opponents collect.

### Kajiki Yumi (加治木 ゆみ)
Yumi is a third-year at Tsuruga Academy, and one of its Mahjong Club's key members. Originally very weak at mahjong, she wound up buying a book after a loss to Kanbara in her first year, which allowed her to get much better. While she doesn't have a special ability, she is able to recognize players' abilities and try to form a defense against them as evidenced by her match in the prefectural finals.

Yumi is a calculating and great leader. According to Kanbara, it was Yumi's weirdness that grabbed Momo's attention. It was also thanks to her planning that Tsuruga was able to make it to the championship round of the prefectural tournament. When Kanbara first met Yumi she thought she was a gloomy ice queen, but changed her opinion after they became friends.

Under her somewhat cold and distant exterior, Yumi has shown a more human, humble, and even insecure side. She hid her face when Kanbara even mentioned that Yumi entered Momo's classroom and screamed "I want you!" She has been shown joking and laughing with Momo, and even confided in her underclassman when Amae's abilities got the better of her, saying she thought that if Momo was their captain that they'd have done better.

She is a very skilled Mahjong player, able to not only hold her own against both Saki and Koromo but she was even able to counter the former; she was able to figure out Saki's strategy within two Hands and counter her perfectly. Whilst she herself deemed that one moment as pure luck, she is shown to be a strategic player. She, like Hisa, is also able to grasp concepts at a fast pace, picking up on subtle things that others wouldn't notice immediately.

### Kanbara Satomi (蒲原 智美)
Satomi is a third-year at Tsuruga Academy and the president of the school's Mahjong Club. She is very laid-back type of person but one who, at times, can be very insightful. She is the type of person who is brimming with confidence and nothing seems to get at her. She has great trust in Yumi Kajiki as well as the other members of her club. At first, Yumi thought she was an idiot with an empty-headed grin, but changed her opinion after they became friends. Kanbara's most distinguishing feature is the fact that she almost never stops smiling and her distinctive laughter style, I.E. "Wahahaha!". She is one of the few who can detect Momo, though only when she is upwind of her.

### Kataoka Yuuki (片岡 優希)
Yuuki is a first-year student at Kiyosumi High School. She has been friends with [url=/c34908]Nodoka[/url] since middle school. Yuuki deeply loves tacos and any food with a name similar to taco, even to the point where she chose to go to Kiyosumi simply because the cafeteria sells tacos. She likes being a comedian, especially when she interacts with Kyoutarou Suga. espite being a first year in high school, Yuuki is very child-like. She seems to be obsessed with Nodoka's large breasts and wants larger ones herself. She is flirtatious towards [url=/c42936]Kyoutarou[/url]; whether this is because of an actual attraction or because she likes to poke fun is unknown. She is also protective of her friends: during the nationals when the media says that the Nagano prefecture has been dropping in power, she gets angry because she feels that they are making fun of her friends and she vows to make them pay.

Yuuki's main ability is to be very strong in the East wind of every game, often jumping out to huge leads against her opponents. She can supplement this with what she refers to as "taco power" by eating her favorite food, tacos - or in a pinch eating something with taco in the word such as takoyaki (たこやき) which can partially increase her ability. However, since competition games are hanchans (East and South winds), she often struggles in the south wind usually giving back most if not all of her gains.

### Kunihiro Hajime (国広 一)
Hajime is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School. She is Touka's personal maid and has her hands chained to avoid her using sleight-of-hand tricks during the tournament. Her father (who is a magician and also the one who taught her the sleight-of-hand trick) sold her to Touka for cash due to having a difficulties to earn money as a magician.

Hajime for the most part is easygoing, though she does get a little jealous when Touka acts friendly towards other people. From her time when she was younger, she had worn a moon tattoo on her cheek though after playing against Koromo she took it off and now wears a star instead. Since being brought in by Touka, she now considers her mahjong team as a family.

### Miyanaga Saki (宮永 咲)
Saki is a first-year student and is the titular character of the story. When originally discovered by Kiyosumi's club, she was notorious for her ability to finish plus/minus 0, essentially finishing with the same score she started with (+/- 400 points). When Saki was little, she played mahjong with her family. If she lost, she would lose her allowance, so she learnt how to not lose; if she won too much, her parents get angry, so she learnt how to not win too much. Through this, she developed a dislike of mahjong, seeing it as only a formality for her family to get angry with her.

Her main ability is rinshan kaihou, or winning off of a tile taken from the dead wall after calling kan. It can even go to the extend that she can call multiple kans off of the dead well en route to the win. Outside of using her abilities, her gameplay tends to be rather quiet. However, she appears to get a handle on the flow of any particular game, thus allowing her to make use of her ability.

Saki is a shy, bookish girl with a poor sense of direction. At first, despite her skills, she doesn't like mahjong, in particular because of her family. She is very caring about her friends' feelings, as seen when she loses on purpose to [url=/c34911]Yuuki[/url] to make her feel better and stops doing so because [url=/c34908]Nodoka[/url] says that she cannot have fun if Saki is holding back. Saki gets very excited when thinking about playing against strong competition.

Saki also has the ability to recognize the tiles that can form a kan. She could also feel the fourth tile in the wall one or two turns in advance; when she does this, her eyes wander over to the wall, looking at the tile she can use to form a kan with.

### Ryuumonbuchi Touka (龍門渕 透華)
Touka is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School and is the president of the mahjong club. Touka is the daughter of Ryuumonbuchi High School's principal and her grandfather owns the school.

Touka's playing style is similar to Nodoka in that she plays a fair amount of online mahjong. She uses a careful approach to obtain easily winnable hands. What differs is that she uses her emotions to ride the flow of the table when going up against strong opponents. However, Touka can enter what her friends call a "cold state" where she utilizes her flow control without the hindrance of emotion. This increases her ability so much that she can easily dominate very strong opponents like Saki, Koromo and even Fujita. The problem is that in this state she loses consciousness after a few games and cannot recall anything she did while in her cold state.

Touka is an eccentric girl who loves to stand out and hates it when others stand out more than her. She is an ojousama, having a personal butler and maid, and is very ladylike most of the time. However, this is thrown out the window when she interacts with Nodoka. Besides being somewhat jealous of the attention Nodoka gets, Touka derives physical pleasure when playing at the same table as Nodocchi. In contrast to her somewhat snobby attitude, Touka cares a lot for others, especially Koromo Amae, as demonstrated by her motivations for entering the team tournament. She is very motherly towards her cousin Koromo, yet dislikes being told so.

### Sawamura Tomoki (沢村 智紀)
Tomoki is a second-year student at Ryuumonbuchi High School. Hajime stated that Tomoki was like one of the elder sisters in their family. She was a top ranked player at an RTS online video game before Touka recruited her to their mahjong team.

Tomoki is a very quiet and stoic girl who only talks when she deems necessary, though she is sometimes mean to Touka when she is down, but Tomoki has never shown to have been rude to other people except Touka which implies that they are more family like. She's very serious except when she's being snarky. She has somewhat of a grudge against Kaori Senoo as her opponent, due to being defeated by her in the prefecturals.

### Senoo Kaori (妹尾 佳織)
Kaori is a second-year at Tsuruga Academy and Kanbara's childhood friend. She joined the school's Mahjong Club as the fifth member, making it possible for them to enter into the tournament. Kaori is a very shy and ditsy girl who gets nervous easily. Despite her apparent status as a complete beginner in mahjong, she appears to have a perceptive side, having noticed that Saki Miyanaga wasn't the least bit deterred during her match against Kazue Nanpo. She is shown to trust people easily which lead her joining the match against Mako Someya and others during combined training camp (in which they tricked her to get revenge).

Kaori is a beginner at mahjong her moves often confuse her opponents. However, her great luck allows her to win sometimes, and the fact that she cannot be read easily by opponents is another powerful factor.

### Someya Mako (染谷 まこ)
Mako is a second-year student at Kiyosumi High School and plays the sergeant (2nd) position. Mako was introduced to mahjong at an early age as her grandfather owned a mahjong parlor and she regularly visited there (she now works there as a waitress). As a result of this, she picks up her peculiar speech manner and more importantly her special ability; she also received her glasses from him. Nicknamed "Spindle Territory", it allows her to memorize games she has seen or played in so as to be able to recall them in similar situations. She utilizes this when she takes her glasses off.

Mako is a reliable person and a trusting friend, being the only person that [url=/c35287]Hisa[/url] shows her doubts to. She is often snarky when she speaks to Hisa. She was very close to her grandpa growing up and has adopted some of his personality, like the way he speaks. She uses the dialect from Hiroshima prefecture because of his influence. However, she is also shown to be a bit vengeful, as she, along with [url=/c35297]Tomoki[/url] and [url=/c35502]Miharu[/url], sought revenge against [url=/c35509]Kaori[/url] for defeating them in the prefectural final with her beginner's luck.

### Suga Kyoutarou (須賀 京太郎)
Kyoutarou is a first-yeart at Kiyosumi High School. He was a middle school classmate of Saki and joined the handball club in which he reached the prefectural final for the inter middle championship. After entering high school, he joined the mahjong club because of his unrequited crush on the inter middle champion Nodoka. He is the only male in Kiyosumi's mahjong club. Due to his poor mahjong skills, he only occasionally attracts the attention of Yuuki and serves primarily as the club's errand-boy.

Although he fights off Yuuki's flirting, he likes to repeatedly poke her and is inevitably rewarded with a punch. While Yuuki flirts with him, she also treats him like a dog when he fetches Yuuki her tacos. Between his mediocre mahjong skills, his unrequited crush on Nodoka (and later on Mihoko as well), and Hisa delegating all of the club's heavy lifting to him, he gets mimimal attention and respect.

### Takei Hisa (竹井 久)
Hisa is a third-year student at Kiyosumi High School, and plays the lieutenant (3rd) position on the team. She is the president of the mahjong club, as well as the student congress president (she keeps insisting others to refer to her as this). Her history is a bit shady as when she was younger, she went by the name of Hisa Ueno and during a tournament (in which she played with [url=/c35500]Mihoko[/url]), she mysteriously withdrew despite being near the top of the leaderboard. 

Outside of an important competition, Hisa sticks to playing a rational style of mahjong, much like [url=//c34908]Nodoka[/url]. However, during key moments in such tournaments, she relies on bad waits because she feels that she always wins with them. She likewise believes that there is a meaning to each tile you grab, utilizing the flow of the game, and changes her hand accordingly. Although not as skilled as [url=/c35295]Jun[/url] at sensing flow, she still has a very good grasp on it, and picks her moments to declare riichi and win.

Hisa is shown to be a great leader both while playing mahjong and outside of it. Hisa is very caring for her underclassmen like when she comforts [url=/c34911]Yuuki[/url] after her defeat in the prefectural tournament. She has good foresight and can be very scheming. She is shown to have great confidence in her mahjong ability and will not back down from a challenge. However, she did waver during the national tournament's second round but recovered soon after. Opponents have described her as having bad manners due to her slamming of the tiles during matches.

### Touyoko Momoko (東横 桃子)
Momoko, also nicknamed "Momo", is a first-year at Tsuruga Academy. She is sought out specifically by Yumi after a match through LAN mahjong, and "appears" when Yumi calls her out during a class break to acknowledge her skills. The two wind up becoming very close friends, so much so that she gets jealous of others Yumi shows interest in as well as becoming very anxious of what will happen after Yumi graduates. Her speech includes an accent which often adds the ending "su" and "s" any to her sentences. She is not a very social person; she stated that even in class, it was as if her classmates never realized if she was or wasn't there. It wasn't until the day she met Yumi Kajiki, that she began becoming more social to people around her, especially to her teammates. She has a strong affection for Yumi and becomes quite jealous when Yumi shows interest in other people. Momoko usually refers to others with self-invented names rather than their actual designations. This can probably be attributed to Momoko having cut off communication to others when she was younger; her speech never maturing.

While a fairly decent player, her increased mahjong playing ability primarily comes when she augments her negative presence into an advantageous stealth state, causing her opponents to miss her moves. When in this mode, she calls herself the "Stealth Momo". This doesn't work, though, on others who ignore presence such as Nodoka. Others play into her hands and when she potentially plays into theirs, they overlook their chances. When she sits down at the mahjong table, stronger players are more aware of her presence and it takes time for her to disappear. Due to this, she is better at longer team games rather than in the 2 round (2 hanchan) games in the individuals.
