## Description
In the city of London, a young girl named Espella Cantabella is chased after by a mysterious force and seeks the aid of Professor Layton and his assistant, Luke Triton. When Espella is suddenly captured, Layton's investigation leads him to a strange book which transports him and Luke to a strange medieval city known as Labyrinthia. This town is allegedly home to witches who hides in the shadows, and is controlled by someone called the Story Teller, who allegedly has the power to turn anything he writes into reality. Meanwhile, Phoenix Wright and his assistant, Maya Fey, who have traveled to London on business, encounter the same book and are also transported to Labyrinthia. There, they discover Espella has been accused of being a witch and is to be put on trial. As Phoenix decides to defend Espella, soon discovering that the laws of this world are far different from his own, Layton seeks to solve the mystery behind Labyrinthia, with the two not always seeing eye to eye.

### Ayasato Mayoi (綾里 真宵)
Heir to a prominent family of spiritualists, Maya is Phoenix's obligatory perky sidekick during all three games.

Maya is optimistic, excitable, friendly, curious, and a fangirl for all things Steel Samurai. Like her sister she is tenacious to a fault, and very attached to "Nick" (her and her sister's name for Phoenix). Not always the brightest but loyal and outgoing.

Maya grew up in Kurain, training to be a spiritual medium. After the disappearance of her mother when she was two, and later because her sister left the village, she is destined to become the heir of her family. Though her sister left home they still remain in contact and are very close.

Maya's spiritual powers are still somewhat underdeveloped, and she has trouble calling spirits.

### Hershel Layton (エルシャール・レイトン)
Professor Hershel Layton is a famous archaeology professor with a fascination with puzzles. His love of puzzles has solved numerous mysteries and put his name in the papers many times. He travels with his apprentice [url=https://vndb.org/c17637]Luke Triton[/url].

Under mysterious circumstances, both Triton and himself were transported to Labyrinthia, as were [url=https://vndb.org/c3941]Phoenix Wright[/url] and [url=https://vndb.org/c3944]Maya Fey[/url]. 

[spoiler]While in Labyrinthia, Layton was apparently turned to gold by the spell "Goldor". Fey was accused of being the "witch" responsible and was put on trial, though Wright was able to prove her innocence.

It was later revealed that Layton was still alive; the "spell" simply consisted of the Shades removing Layton from the scene and placing a statue in his image in his place.

Later, when [url=https://vndb.org/c17638]Espella Cantabella[/url] was tried for being the Great Witch Bezella, High Inquisitor [url=https://vndb.org/c17640]Darklaw[/url], who was in charge of the case, was called to give testimony. Layton filled the vacant inquisitor's bench to help Wright get to the truth behind Labyrinthia.[/spoiler]

Kira was a flower girl living in Labyrinthia.

Like all of its residents, Kira signed a contract with Labrelum Inc. to live in Labyrinthia and have her memories repressed. Though she tried to live her new life selling flowers, unfortunately for her, she was one of the town's witches, and had a Talea Magica with the gems for the spells Dimere and Ignaize. Since the laws of the town meant that all witches were to be executed by fire, Kira hid her powers.

She eventually came to suspect that [url=https://vndb.org/c17638]Espella Cantabella[/url] was the Great Witch Bezella. Believing the [url=https://vndb.org/c17639]Storyteller[/url]'s prophecy that the witch trials would end if Bezella was put to the flames, Kira sought to frame Cantabella for witchcraft and have her executed, thus freeing her from her double life.

One rainy evening, Kira witnessed Cantabella travelling by herself through the forest, and cast Dimere on herself to get close to Cantabella without being detected. As Cantabella was being accosted by Robbs and Muggs, Kira cast Ignaize to incinerate the thugs and escaped, though she accidentally dropped her glasses in the milk bucket Cantabella was holding in the process. After noticing that her glasses were gone, Kira chanted Amere to become visible, bringing Emeer Punchenbaug, who mistook the chant for his own name, to the scene. Kira returned to look for her glasses, but was unable to find them, as Mary had taken them with the bucket. Kira dropped her Talea Magica close by for [url=https://vndb.org/c17941]Wordsmith[/url] to find, completing the frame-up.

Kira's plan appeared to be working, as Cantabella was arrested and tried at the Witches' Court. She testified as a witness in Cantabella's trial, saying that Cantabella was the witch who murdered Robbs and Muggs. However, [url=https://vndb.org/c17636]Hershel Layton[/url] and [url=https://vndb.org/c3941]Phoenix Wright[/url], the latter being Cantabella's defender, found the contradictions in the case and eventually accused Kira of being a witch. Kira denied the accusation, but a search of the milk bucket revealed her glasses inside, causing her to scream in despair.

After she was placed inside the cage above the fire pit, Kira confessed to everything. She openly accused Cantabella of being Bezella and pleaded for her own life. The judge and [url=https://vndb.org/c17635]Zacharias Barnham[/url] ignored her begging and Kira was dropped into the flames below.

Though seemingly executed, Kira survived; the bottom of the cage had a concealed trapdoor that dropped her safely onto a cart in a cave beneath the courthouse. She was taken to [url=https://vndb.org/c17640]Darklaw[/url], who had her brainwashed into becoming a Shade, with no memory of being a flower seller.

Kira was later sent to cause an explosion at the marketplace. Wright and [url=https://vndb.org/c17637]Luke Triton[/url] caught up with her as she attempted to escape, and they were both shocked to see the flower girl who they thought had died. Wright tried to ask her why she was still alive, but she did not answer and fled.

Later that evening, Kira was tasked to assassinate the Storyteller by the Storyteller himself (though unknown to Kira, he instead intended to fake his death). To do so, she sneaked up the bell tower to prepare. On the way, she encountered Darklaw, who was carrying an unconscious Cantabella up the tower. Darklaw attacked Kira; Kira managed to scratch Darklaw's neck and pull off her pendant before being drugged unconscious. Darklaw hid Kira in the belfry and framed Cantabella for the Storyteller's "death".

During the ensuing trial, Wright and [url=https://vndb.org/c3944]Maya Fey[/url] found Kira hiding behind the Bell of Ruin and brought her to court to testify. Trying to cover for Darklaw, Kira gave vague answers when questioned. After Wright decided to question Darklaw instead, Kira decided to defy her and testified that she had betrayed the Shades. The trial ultimately ended with the revelation that all of the magic in Labyrinthia had been staged. After the trial, Kira was able to return to being a flower seller.

### Olivia Aldente (オリーブ・アルデンテ)
Olivia Aldente is an Italian chef on board a freighter. She appeared as a witness in [url=https://vndb.org/c17638]Espella Cantabella[/url]'s trial in London.

Aldente was a member of a group of jewel thieves who had been operating in London in recent years. Her group was known for stealing valuable jewels and smuggling them onto freighters, hiding them inside PC Badger toys to avoid detection; the toys were overlooked due to PC Badger being the police mascot. Aldente was responsible for ensuring that the toys and their contents made it out of the city, which her job as a freighter chef put her in the position to do.

One evening, Aldente went to the freighter's cargo hold both to get supplies for her cooking and to check the smuggled goods. When she got there, she found Cantabella holding a PC Badger toy that Aldente knew had a jewel inside. Aldente panicked and tried to pull the toy from Cantabella, causing the tag to get ripped off of the plushie. Aldente then grabbed a steel pipe and attempted to hit Cantabella on the head with it, but Cantabella managed to block the attack. Soon after, however, Aldente was struck on the head herself from behind, with security guard Johnny Smiles entering the hold just as Aldente collapsed. Seeing Cantabella holding the pipe, Smiles assumed she was the assailant and had her arrested.

The blow to Aldente's head was not fatal. She did not have a clear memory of who attacked her, and thus assumed it was Cantabella. To cover up her own crime, she hid the toy she fought over, replaced it with a different, untouched toy, and tore one of the legs off the replacement to make it look like it was damaged in the struggle.

Aldente testified as a witness in Cantabella's trial, claiming that Cantabella had assaulted her and ripped the leg off the toy. Her story fell apart when Cantabella's defense attorney, [url=https://vndb.org/c3941]Phoenix Wright[/url], pointed out the contradictions in her testimony, and when it was revealed to her that Smiles had taken the tag ripped from the original toy and presented it without informing the prosecution. Deducing that Aldente had swapped the toys, Wright ordered a search of the cargo hold.

Realizing that this would reveal her as a jewel thief, Aldente panicked and begged the judge to not allow the search. Regardless, Wright had learned about the jewel thefts and pieced together Aldente's connection. Aldente could do nothing as the police found the swapped toy, with the jewel inside. After becoming so enraged she attempted to cleave her fish on the witness stand, only to miss and get slapped to the floor by it, she confessed, admitting she had not seen who assaulted her. Cantabella was acquitted, but the mystery of who assaulted Aldente was left unsolved to Wright.

### Patorasu Earlgrey (パトラス・アルグレイ)
Jean Greyerl is the alchemist [url=https://vndb.org/c17939]Newton Belduke[/url]'s butler, and the caretaker of his home since his death.

Like the other residents, Greyerl signed a contract with Labrelum Inc. to live in Labyrinthia and have her memories repressed. However, Greyerl's new life was one of poverty. Her circumstances were exacerbated by her being one of the town's witches; as the laws of Labyrinthia stated that all witches were to be executed, she hid this from her parents.

One winter, her parents were unable to pay the rent for their house and facing eviction. Attempting to get the needed money, Greyerl intended to cast Goldor on a fallen leaf to turn it to gold and then sell it. However, the spell was accidentally cast on her pet goat Margaret. Horrified, Greyerl attempted suicide by drowning herself in a river. She was saved by Belduke, who paid the rent and allowed Greyerl to stay at his house as his butler, with her parents' approval. Greyerl pretended to be male to ward off suspicion, as only females could be witches.

Five years later, Greyerl and Belduke witnessed a bell tower appear in the Town Square after a lightning strike; Greyerl noticed a change in Belduke's personality after this. She later noticed him writing a letter that mentioned "exposing the witch". Believing that he was referring to her, she plotted to stop him. She placed a soporific inside his drink of tomato juice before giving it to him in his office. Later, using the Godoor spell, she created a portal behind Belduke so she could take the letter without him noticing. Reading that it was addressed to the [url=https://vndb.org/c17639]Storyteller[/url], Greyerl strangled Belduke, who did not resist; unknown to her, he had committed suicide by poison. She then took the contents of the envelope and replaced it with blank paper.

The following morning, Emeer Punchenbaug helped Greyerl break down Belduke's door. As they entered the room and saw Belduke's body, Greyerl left and called for the knights, thus avoiding suspicion of evidence tampering. Greyerl kept Belduke's letter with her, but could not bring herself to either read or destroy it.

Three months after Belduke's death, Greyerl met [url=https://vndb.org/c3941]Phoenix Wright[/url] and [url=https://vndb.org/c3944]Maya Fey[/url]. Learning that they were investigating Belduke's death, she allowed them to explore the house. During the investigation however, a disguised [url=https://vndb.org/c17640]Darklaw[/url] appeared and cast Goldor on [url=https://vndb.org/c17636]Hershel Layton[/url] in Belduke's office. Fearing suspicion, Greyerl removed the Godoor gem from her Talea Magica and replaced it with the amethyst she wore around her neck to make it look like a Familia gem. She then created a portal from her room to Belduke's office and dropped the sceptre. Fey was accused of being the witch who cast Goldor on Layton and was arrested.

Greyerl claimed the following day that she was awake all night looking for a way to undo the spell on Layton. During Fey's trial, she released her long hair and confirmed Wright's theory that she was in fact a girl, but she denied being a witch. She testified about the events surrounding Belduke's death, but continued to deny involvement. Wright was eventually able to prove that Greyerl was a witch and demonstrated that Belduke had committed suicide, meaning that Greyerl, contrary to what she thought, was not guilty of murder. She then read the letter, realizing that the witch Belduke was referring to was not her, and that he had cared about her the whole time. Seeing that she was mistaken about her master, Greyerl broke down in tears.

Though she was innocent in casting Goldor on Layton and killing Belduke, she was still revealed to be a witch and therefore sentenced to be executed. [url=https://vndb.org/c17638]Espella Cantabella[/url] intervened and offered her life instead by claiming that she was the Great Witch Bezella. Though Greyerl was spared, Fey leapt into action to save Cantabella, and was sent into the flames instead.

As the court decided against executing her for being a witch, Greyerl was placed inside the Deathknell Dungeon to await a new sentence. Later, Wright, Cantabella, and [url=https://vndb.org/c17637]Luke Triton[/url] encountered Greyerl in one of the cells. She apologized for Fey's apparent death, but Triton informed her that they earlier met [url=https://vndb.org/c17940]Kira[/url], who was alive and well after being sent to the flames, meaning that Fey could still be alive. Feeling indebted to the group, Greyerl distracted the guards so they could enter the courtroom and examine the fire pit mechanism undetected.

After the final witch trial and the revelation that magic had been staged, Greyerl was released from prison. She returned to Belduke's house to continue her duties tending to his home.

### Mist Belduke (ミスト・ベルデューク)
Newton Belduke was an alchemist living in Labyrinthia until his death three months before [url=https://vndb.org/c17636]Hershel Layton[/url] and [url=https://vndb.org/c3941]Phoenix Wright[/url]'s arrival.

Newton grew up in a small town with his friend [url=https://vndb.org/c17642]Arthur Cantabella[/url]. One day, they stumbled across underground ruins from an ancient civilization. It was here that they found a large bell made of pure silver on an altar, which they believed would bring prosperity to the town. The two continued their studies, aiming to help the town prosper.

Eventually, they both married and had daughters; Newton fathered [url=https://vndb.org/c17641]Eve[/url], while Arthur fathered [url=https://vndb.org/c17638]Espella[/url]. Newton created an anesthetic from local plants, with the resulting product bringing large profits. The pair created Labrelum Inc., a company that sold many types of medicine, and later brought the bell out of the ruins and placed it in a bell tower inside the town. They designed a mechanism in the belfry that made the bell easier to ring, and created two keys to limit access. The keys were made as pendants, and given to their wives.

On the night of the town's annual fire festival, Newton and Arthur returned to the ruins and found an ancient inscription saying that the bell would bring ruin and therefore must not be rung; the townsfolk had contracted a condition from the groundwater that would cause immediate loss of consciousness at the sound of pure silver being struck. They rushed back to the town, only to find it ablaze; the bell had been rung, and with nobody to contain it, the fire from the festival grew out of control. They found only two survivors, Eve and Espella, who were both in the bell tower. The men deduced that Eve had rung the bell, but she had blocked the memory due to shock. Espella, meanwhile, blamed herself for the fire and insisted that she was the Great Witch Bezella, a character from a book Arthur had read to her. In an attempt to help Espella, the Beldukes aided Arthur in acting out stories of witches being brought to justice. This led to Project Labyrinthia, with a new medieval-style town called Labyrinthia being built on the ruins of the old settlement. New residents were brought in who had signed a contract with Labrelum Inc. that resulted in their memories being wiped of their old lives. Arthur became the "[url=https://vndb.org/c17639]Storyteller[/url]", Newton became the town's "alchemist", and Eve became "High Inquisitor [url=https://vndb.org/c17640]Darklaw[/url]". They covered the bell tower with a material designed to be invisible to the townsfolk, as they feared that it would trigger Espella's memories of the fire. 

As an alchemist, Newton provided medicine for the people of the town, with his patients including Emeer Punchenbaug and Cecil. He also recommended that the orphaned Lettie Mailer begin work as a courier. After rescuing [url=https://vndb.org/c17938]Jean Greyerl[/url] from drowning herself in the river and learning about her status as a "witch", he allowed her to stay with him, but under the guise of a male butler in order to draw attention away from her (as, according to the town's lore, only females could be witches). He also paid the rent for her parents, who agreed to let her stay with him.

One stormy evening, a lightning strike destroyed the cloth that was keeping the bell tower "invisible", thereby revealing it to everyone. Newton witnessed this in the Town Square with Greyerl, and he became terrified that his past was coming back to haunt him. According to Greyerl, his personality began to change, and eventually, he felt he could no longer keep up the lies.

He began writing a letter to Arthur in which he expressed his guilt, stated that he felt he had no choice but to take his own life, and asking his friend to take care of everything. Finally, after Greyerl brought him his nightly drink of tomato juice, Newton completed the letter, locked himself up in his study, and died after drinking a bottle of poison.

However, Newton's letter never reached the Storyteller, as Greyerl had stolen it after mistakenly believing that Newton had intended to expose her as a witch. She also believed that she strangled him to death, as she had strangled his (unbeknownst to her) already dead body when she had stolen the letter.

Newton's death would act as the catalyst to drive his daughter to begin plotting against the Storyteller as revenge.
