## Description
Machi is a story of 8 unrelated protagonists, all with their own problems and objectives, all living in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan. The story spans 5 in-game days and is told through a huge number of live-action still photographs. The protagonists are varied, including a high school playboy, a gamer geek police officer, a struggling actor, an ex-Yakuza man, a TV scriptwriter and many more. Each of the protagonists lead a completely different story that even defies genres, with one story having a lighthearted comedy style while another having a dark, ominous tone.

The player must play all of the stories in parallel, jumping across different protagonists, and backtracking to re-select branches which not only affect the active protagonist, but also other protagonists through often bizarre twists of causality.

Since its release in 1998, Machi has amassed a cult following among Japanese Sound Novel players, causing a yearning for a sequel for years which did not come to fruition until 2008 which had the release of the spiritual sequel, 428: Fusa Sareta Shibuya De.

### Amamiya Keima (雨宮 桂馬)
The protagonist of the "Otaku Detective Runs!" scenario. A detective in the Shibuya Central Police Station's Public Safety Division, Juvenile Section. 25 years old. He loves games and calls himself a "gamer," but is indignant when people around him call him an "otaku." He has a strong sense of justice, but is also very opinionated, and often rushes ahead without listening to the advice of those around him. He also has a habit of using old expressions in conversation.
He is treated as a problem child at the station, as he frequently hangs out at game centers while on duty, and as such few people at the station tolerate him.
His favorite food is Snow Brand Coffee Milk. His hobbies include digital-related hardware such as computers and games. His special skill is the yo-yo.

At the age of 28, he won a literary newcomer's award and started making a living as a writer. A few years ago, he worked on a TV drama that became a huge hit, which made him famous in the industry, and he has been writing plots for various TV dramas ever since.
Although he wants to write high-quality stories, he is disgusted by the reality that there is a demand for low-quality dramas and that he is involved in most of them. He also feels uneasy when strangers submit their own works pretending to be him.
He suffers from neurosis caused by stress, and frequently takes sleeping pills to escape reality, and has such a stoic way of thinking that he finds value in them. He also uses alcohol (he prefers straight bourbon) and caffeine pills.
Although he has his own home, he lives at the Nanbu Hotel in Shibuya. As the hotel does all the house cleaning, he rarely goes home.

### Umabe Jintarou (馬部 甚太郎)

By happenstance, he is replaced by an actor who looks exactly like him, Umabe Jintaro, and ends up playing the role of a yakuza boss.
